About Me:
My name is Dalen Wakeley-Smith, and I am an Assistant Professor of History at Washington University in Saint Louis. My research focuses on the history of American Romani people and the power of “Gypsy” representations in the United States. My forthcoming book, Gypsy Madness: American Roma, Immigration Regimes, and Race explores the history of Romani immigration, urban development, and racialization in New York City from 1890 to 1945. Prior to my current position I was a Charles Warren Global American Studies Fellow at Harvard University. I earned my Ph.D. in Anthropology and History from the University of Michigan in 2022.
